I’ve always been fascinated by wood art. My fascination started when I watched the movie “bicentennial man”. It’s about a robot that can think and feel and strived to be human. His master found him unique when started sculpting art pieces from wood the robot found on the beach. When his master asked him how he did it, he said something like, “I looked at the texture of wood, its natural linings and grains and then decide what it can become”. My interpretation of that is the art piece was there all along. You just have to liberate it from its outer shell. That’s how I feel about wooden art. One of my favorite wood art pieces is an intarsia portrait of a famous person.

Intarsia is inlaying of wood pieces to complete the artwork. You can choose different wood and combine it together for a more realistic effect. It is similar to 3D effect. You can use different colors of wood to add outline. This art technique was first developed in Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries.
