Fountains were originally made to be functional. It is usually connected to springs or aqueducts and is used to provide drinking water and water for bathing. But nowadays, most fountains are a work of art which pours water into basin or jets it into the air for decorative or dramatic effect. The fountain came from the Latin word fons or fontis which means a source or spring.

Modern fountain use mechanical pumps to shoots water high up in the air. The highest fountain in the world is King Fahd’s Fountain in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia which rises 260 meters (853 feet) above the Red Sea. The musical fountain combines moving jets of water, colored lights and recorded music. This is controlled by a computer for dramatic effects. Much smaller water fountains are also popular. Table top water fountains which you can display at home are all admired and trendy as well.
