votive candle
Before candles became popular decorative items for the home, office and shops, it was used in religious practices. Lit candles were used in religious processions as a sign of respect and reverence in the Divine Presence. Today, most of these practices still exist, but the votive candle became extremely popular in the decorative front. By creating votive lamps, people are able to decorate their homes and at the same time provide lighting. It is mostly for decoration though, because it is dangerous to leave lit candles unattended.
The votive candle is just slightly bigger than the tea light. It is usually placed in a votive candle holder and can be used in the dining room or bedroom for a romantic effect. Some candles are perfumed so they exude a certain fragrance that enhances even more the romantic mood. Different fragrances claim to have different effects on a person. The aromatic lavender, for example, is supposed to act as a relaxant.
